Uptown Players announces auditions for its upcoming production of Zanna, Don't. Best candidates will be good comic actors with strong singing skills who move well. All roles are open and all ethnicities are encouraged to audition. One Equity contract will be available.
Please prepare 16 bars of two contrasting songs (preferably in the pop/rock genre). Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key. An accompanist will be provided. You will also be asked to read briefly from the script.
Callbacks will consist of singing from the score, additional reading from the script and a dance audition.
Auditions will be held at KD Studio Theatre (2600 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX 75207). For an audition appointment, call 214-219-2718, no emails please.
A copy of the script is available (for members) at STAGE. A copy of the script may be reviewed at the Uptown box office by prior arrangement.

Character Breakdown:
ZANNA (tenor/baritone to high G): the heart and soul of Heartsville; a hip, fun-loving matchmaker, driven to make the world better, even if he doesn't always fully think through his choices. A natural charmer, everyone's best friend.
STEVE (baritone to E-flat above middle C): the new guy in town; All-American high school football hunk, but self-effacing and shy; hoping desperately to fit in.
MIKE (tenor/baritone to high G): all-around geeky/cute fun guy; captain of the chess team, which makes him king of the school, but with a humble appreciation of the simple joys in life, like finding that one special guy to settle down with.
TANK (tenor/baritone to high G): Zanna's sidekick, and the school DJ; somewhere between nerdy and ultra-cool; doubles as a DINER CUSTOMER and also TEX.
BUCK (baritone to E-flat; should have a few low notes as well): Candi's browbeaten sidekick; a nice guy who just sort of goes with the flow; doubles as DINER CUSTOMER and also BRONCO.
ROBERTA (belt to high F): tough as nails on the outside, a hopeless romantic on the inside; perennial unlucky in relationships, she heroically, and comically, never gives up her pursuit of true love.
KATE (belt to C, plus a few other higher notes mixed in): sweet, innocent over-achiever who, like Steve, is not quite prepared to have her world thrown upside-down.
CANDI (belt to C, plus a few other higher notes mixed in): the school's narrow-minded busy-body, the one you love to hate; doubles as CARLA, a DINER CUSTOMER and LORETTA.
ZANNA, DONT is a hip musical fairy tale about a matchmaking teen who turns relationships upside down, challenges our point of view, and changes the world forever. The show takes place in a magical world where it's normal to be gay and taboo to be straight. When Kate and Steve fall in love, it's up to Zanna, the local love fairy, to look into his book of spells to make the world safe for the two lovers, but when Zanna's spell has a bigger impact than he thought, is this new world really what he wanted? With a little magic and a fresh pop score, ZANNA celebrates the discovery of love. ZANNA, DON'T played Off-Broadway in 2003 and received four Drama Desk award nominations for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Music and Best Lyrics.
